Vanguard download issues?

All of a sudden I am getting a new error message when I try to download my Vanguard records into Quicken Premier 2009. It says "your financial institution has downloaded data for an account that does not exist in your Quicken file". This after I have made no changes and it has worked for months.

Anyone else having this problem? Any idea if it's on the Intuit side or the Vanguard side?
I have the exact same problem.&nbsp_ Same message that you received, with OL 362-A error.
Quote:" Vanguard download issues?: Same problem here.  I posted a forum entry in the Quicken NG as well seeing if..."

      yup - same here -

All is well with my Fidelity, Schwab, TRowe, etc -

but Vanguard is broken.... wed - 5/13/09
Me too!  Since it started with Quicken's most recent "update" I would place my money on Quicken.  Happening with three accounts. Can't connect to any of them.  OL-362A.

Just wasted three hours trying to troubleshoot it.
I can download from within Vanguard website into Quicken with no problem, but like everyone else, I'm getting OL-362-A when I try to do automatic download from Quicken.  Has anyone heard anything from Vanguard?
Spoke with Vanguard this morning (800-860-8394 for their web help desk)_ a known issue, no workaround.  They're working as fast as they can on a resolution.  They've attached to my account a ticket such that I'll be notified as soon as a fix is made.  Others might wish to do the same.

I'll report any further updates in the Quicken NG.

            - Andrew
tried the Web Connect again to get the OFX file.  Then saved it vs launching Q2009.

In looking at the file with Notepad, it appears to me that Vanguard has messed up the acct number by modifiying it (randomly) to include a prefix of one of the accounts.

Save the OFX file, and then open the file - search/look for the ACCTID tag and compare to your Vanguard account in Quicken.

Mine had it as.... 0585-xxxxx (acct number)

Since the "0585" is actually my_

Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares

              which is the sub-account number,

of course it would not match the basic "xxxxx" acct number in Q2009.... and therefore produces the mismatch error_ either via Direct Connect, or via the Web Connect.
I'm also getting the OL-362-A when using 'update data' for my Vanguard mutual fund account. All my attenpts to fix have failed. I was however able to logon to the Vanguard site and successfully download into Quicken. I got the NAV update_ but since I had no transactions to download, I don't know if they would have been sent. Let me know if you have any success 'pushing' from the site rather than 'pulling' from Quicken'. Hope there is a fix soon.
This problem is on the Vanguard side. I found the fix and it is simple to implement. Unfortunately Vanguard isn't ready to listen to the fix when I tried to tell them how to fix it.  THIS FIX IS APPLICABLE TO 2008 VERSION OF QUICKEN AS WELL.

1 - Remove the Direct Connect link between Quicken and Vanguard.

2 - Goto Vanguards site, login and then click on download transactions in upper right corner once you are in the account view at the Vanguard's site.

Step two from above will download your transaction in to Quicken. Now goto the account details in  Quicken and look at the Account Number displayed. You will notice that there is few digits followed by hyphen and then the real account number. Remember the number before the hyphen as you will need it in one of the step below.

3 - Goto through the motion and restablish the Direct Connect. The error message will be display, which is Ok in this step.

4 - Go to the account details in the Quicken again. You will see that the digits before hyphen are missing in the account number once Step 3 is completed. Edit the details and modify the account number by pre-pending the digits before hyphen as was observed in Step 2 above followed by a hyphen itself (This account number should look like exactly as it was displayed in Webconnect download in Step 2. You can cut-and-paste from Step 2 into this step)

5  - Attempt Direct Connect download. This should work now flawlessly as it is working for me after the change.

This is a careless mistake by a programmer on Vanguard side. S/he should be put in front of firing squad for that!

                  Hope this helps.

I just called Vanguard regarding the download issue.

They stated they are aware of the problem and that their tech support is working on it.

No ETA for a fix as of yet.&nbsp_ If you call them, they will email you with more info, including an ETA for the fix when available, and an email when it is actually fixed.

                      KalPal,

I don't think your "fix" will work.

The digits before the hyphen refer to Vanguard's fund numbers.&nbsp_ Those numbers have never been in the Quicken account details, since you can hold more than one fund in an account.

Those prefix numbers are irrelevant in Quicken.
                        Quote:" Vanguard download issues?: KalPal,

It has worked fine for last two days for me. It downloads entire account without any problem. The meaning of those number is immaterial.

                          I should qualify:

I have 12 fund going into a single Quicken account. Not sure what will happen if they are individual accounts.
Quote:" Vanguard download issues?: I should qualify: I have 12 fund going into a single Quicken account. Not sure what will..."

So, tell us what the prefix numbers are in relationship to the Vanguard account?&nbsp_ Is it one of the fund numbers...or just some random prefix Vanguard added to the accounts?&nbsp_ And if it is one of the fund numbers, WHICH fund number is Vanguard mistakenly using?

If you have 12 funds in one account, which fund number did Vanguard select to add to your account number?
Quote:" Vanguard download issues?: It has worked fine for last two days for me. It downloads entire account without any problem...."

                              Just speculating.

I suspect that those numbers are (or were, and will be again) very meaningful.

Vanguard offers the option of downloading&nbsp_each fund&nbsp_to&nbsp_a separate Quicken account,&nbsp_or combining&nbsp_multiple funds into one downloaded account.&nbsp_

When things work normally, I suspect that the downloads of&nbsp_each fund to&nbsp_a&nbsp_separate Quicken&nbsp_account will use the Vanguard&nbsp_account number plus the fund number as the Quicken account number_ while the downloads of&nbsp_multiple funds to one Quicken&nbsp_account will use just the Vanguard&nbsp_account number.&nbsp_ I think there's a reasonable chance that when the dust clears, that those who normally download multiple funds to one Quicken&nbsp_account, and who follow your advice_ will, at the least, have to reverse the "fix".
Quote:" Vanguard download issues?: So, tell us what the prefix numbers are in relationship to the Vanguard account?&nbsp_ Is it one..."

If I can get hold of their source code then may be I can find the relationship but until then your guess is a good mine. In any case what does it matter what the relationship is? It isn't working for me is the conclusion and that is where I stop. I don't care to dwell on what it may be, how it effects, where it is gotten from, etc.

For a single Quicken account, no such number was there when it was working. Now it is there so I am showing how to fix it until they come out with a permanent fix.

Most likely. You can decide not to do anything and wait until they come out with the fix_ or you can do this "temporary" change and then undo it when the real fix is out and in the mean time enjoy the ability to download.
Quote:" Vanguard download issues?: It has worked fine for last two days for me. It downloads entire account without any problem...."

But what happens when they go back to the 'old' way of doing things when they realize what they broke? (Rhetorical question - I am not about to start manipulating MY account details to make it fix their download format which might indeed change back to any old format prior to the screw up on their end).

just to follow up on my previous posting of saving the OFX file (with a *.txt filename) via Web Connect, and then looking at the OFX file (via Notepad) and finding the ACCTID tag.

In our case - we have two accounts -

and in both cases, the normal account number has been prefixed with one of the "fund numbers".

Interestingly, the fund number in each case is the 2nd fund listed when viewing our Vanguard accounts online....

For us - it was 0585  and the other was 0046.

SO - from a programming standpoint, it appears that for the Quicken QFX download interface, the Vanguard server is prefixing the account number with the 2nd fund number... and using that for the Direct Connect or the Web Connect - which now of course don't match and fail.
                                        Hello All,

We have spoken with Vanguard about the problem some of our mutual customers are running into.  Vanguard informed us this is an issue that they are working towards a fix for in the next couple of days.

In the meantime the recommended course of action for you is to wait and do nothing.  Deactivating and reactivating your account will ultimately cause you to receive an error when Vanguard?s fix is released.

Thanks all for your patience, and we will keep you updated on any news from Vanguard if things change with respect to the timing of their fix.  Again the best solution for you is to do nothing with your Vanguard accounts while the fix is being implemented. Should you have any further questions, please contact Vanguard directly.

                                        Thanks--

just edit the account number in the Quicken account details - probably has the bogus prefix now.... just delete it when it "breaks" after it's fixed.

BTW - just to see...  I simply edited the account number in the Quicken Account Details (adding the bogus prefix) and did an Update - both of my Vanguard accounts downloaded without error.....

Same here -- I added the 2nd fund number followed by a dash as a prefix to my account number and it downloaded fine.  NOTE:  no additional prefix is required for Vanguard brokerage accounts.

I wrote to Vanguard yesterday, and got a non-answer.  Basically, they told me to deactivate, then activate my Quicken accounts.  They did correctly say that we could by-pass the problem by downloading using Web Connect from the Vanguard site.

I replied, asking them to acknowledge the problem and state when it would be fixed.

It appears ANY type of download connection will be presented with the same incorrect ACCTID -

The Web Connect worked fine for me.&nbsp_ I had used that as a work-around until I learned about the prefix from this forum.&nbsp_ I think it works because you have to manually associate the Quicken account with the Vanguard account, i.e., it does not depend upon Quicken account numbers. &nbsp_&nbsp_ M.

Thanks for the update.&nbsp_ Good to know...so I can stop pulling out the little hair I have left in frustration.
So after several days of Vanguard data download failure, it worked for me today. But I noticed several odd things.

                                                          1) There were several duplicate transactions that I had to delete manually going back to as far as 2008. Not all prior transactions were downloaded, just some, so that's really odd.

                                                          2) For my Rollover IRA account, for an index fund exchange transaction, it asked me to either specify lots or select average cost. I have had prior exchange transactions and it has never asked me for this action, so I'm confused why it did and how it is affecting my cost basis now.

Anyone else saw the same problem?

A manual download (.qfx) worked for me too, Quicken found my fund transactions.

I shot a message to Vanguard just to get on record with this, they replied acknowledging the problem but still wanted to know my exact level of Quicken (like that matters?).

Nonetheless, I can easily live with the manual download until sometime next week.  Best they get this fixed before month-end distributions!
Quicken has now downloaded my three Vanguard accounts without the dreaded OL-362-A error message! I did it twice, just to be sure. I think Vanguard has found a solution to the problem.

Hopefully, it will work for you, too.

I too had random transactions from 2007 to current downloaded as new.&nbsp_ Not every transaction from that time period...just some.

Deleted them in the Compare to Register pane and it seems to be okay for now.

Will see what happens on Monday.
If you did the work around that I had posted, it is time to undo it or else you won't get new transactions. To undo the change, simply remove that extra digits and the hyphen that was added as part of the work around. You do remember what you added, right?
Today for the first time attempted to set up and download Vanguard accounts to Quicken (Basic 2007).  Same error message OL-362-A.  Have removed and redone, etc., no joy.

                                                                        - Andrew
Adding to this chorus of Vanguard 362 errors_ I'm thinking it has to do with Vanguard's conversion of brokerage services from Pershing to Vanguard (internal) -- I did just get a letter from Vanguard stating that my brokerage account number will change (and gave me the new number).

However, this change is supposed to happen May 20 -- and going directly to Vanguard's site I see no new account as of yet.

Despite this, I tried adding a new brokerage account in Quicken with my new number then trying adding it to one-step-update, but then I get an error stating that all accounts are already activated.

I guess it's a little premature to get too upset just yet, other than this anomaly everything is complete and correct, and perhaps eventually as the conversion happens it will sort itself out_ meanwhile I'm not sure if I should keep this 'new' account or delete it and let the regular update inform me when Vanguard completes their process.

In the meantime, is there any place to look or way to capture just what data Quicken is downloading, where perhaps I can see the actual missing account?

And, any of you out there getting this error WITHOUT having a Vanguard brokerage account?
