I can't update Quicken 2009 to Version 7

I have Quicken 2009 Premier, version 6. I can't update (automatic, or manual) to Version 7. I have disabled my antivirus, spyware protection, ect. Still not updating. I'm also getting the "A patching engine error has occured" message.
  • Interesting...I have Deluxe 2009 with the same error message...sounds like it is a problem with the patch itself...I will try the support folks.   I think that patch just came out.

  • I'm having the same patching engine error.  Hopefully they will get it fixed.
  • Tried to update to Version 7 and was greeted with a fail message specifying that there was a failure in the patching engine.  I am assuming there is a problem with the patch.  Hope it is resolved quickly.
  • I tried all the solutions listed and none work.   First patch in all the years of upgrades that gave me this problem.  I have Quicken Deluxe 2009.

  • I'm in the process of backing up my drive with Quicken on it. I use Windows XP Pro 32bit, I have Quicken installed to - E:\Quicken -, an encrypted drive (truecrypt). I haven't had any problems updating until this update.
    I've tried checking for
    1. the install directory
    2. Cleaned the Temp Folder
    3. download and install of the manual patch (same result)
    4. installing the patch from safe mode ( in safe mode I can't run Truecrypt.)
After I back up the encrypted drive, I'll feel a bit better about trying other things.
Hope that there is some fix besides not using the encrypted drive. An encrypted drive is a must for my financial information.
  • Same problem, tried all solutions to no avail plus an online chat!  Here is the hangup displayed on the update log.  Vista home premium/Quicken 2009 Deluxe updat 6 to 7/files validated/no problems with V6.  This is where theings seem to fall apart, with the convert_stub.dat file

I've finally got Quicken to update to version 7.
1. I backed up my encrypted drive.
2. I realized that I didn't buy this version of Quicken in a store, but online with a download.
3. I managed to find my online receipt, and download it again (this download is larger than the first one.)
4. Uninstalled, with control panel, the Quicken that wouldn't update.
5. Restarted computer
6. Installed the new download of Quicken 2009 Premier.
7. During installation, Quicken checked for updates
8. Restarted Computer
9. Ran Quicken, and it was version 7.
10. It seemed to hang up with " Updating quotes, asset classes, headlines, and alerts" (sat there for a long time with no timeout.) Since I haven't tried this early in the day before, I can't say that this is a problem though.
It's funny, that this is the first Quicken that I've downloaded, and the first Quicken that wouldn't update correctly (at just about the same time as Quicken 2010 is coming out)
Hope that this helps, and hope that if its a downloaded Quicken problem that you have the online receipt.
All in all, Quicken is a pretty good piece of software. I've been using it since before windows. DA DOS DAYS...
  • I tried everything Quicken Kathryn said to try and they all failed
I read Geo411 answer and his experience with a download version matched mine
I followed his directions and have finally updated to version 7
    Intuit, you owe Geo411 thanks
Too bad for us Intuit has near monopoly on financial and tax software else they would be losing more business
  • same here on XP -
downloaded the patch manually, and tried running it manually.

looking at the Update.log file - it really doesn't matter -
as the patch is failing to locate & pattern match the previous "stub" module.

Wonder if this is the newly created Money Converter ????

  • Geo411 - This is for Kathryn but no place to comment on her response.

Why, oh why has Quicken not stopped us all in the process of trying to fix this problem at the BEGINNING? I can see that I am not alone in having tried all solutions offered through the Help function up to and including attempt to do the patch in Safe Mode. Result? 45 minutes of wasted time.

C'mon. Intervene in the prompts to download and put up a warning front and center on the web site in all the places we looked at in our FIRST attempts to deal with this.

Quicken user since DOS version 2 back in the 1980's - when folks seemed to be more on top of things.
  • I had the same problem. I spoke to them on live chat. I was told to uninstall 2009 and reinstall it. I did not loose my date. But I advise backing it up on disk. It worked.
  • Get on the list to be notified of the solution. I received the email today, followed the instructions, and amazingly, it worked for once on the first try! Basically, uninstall Quicken, run a clean Quicken program, delete a file here and there, empty recycle bin, restart computer and reinstall from the link in the email, not from the original cd. I now have version 7 installed no problem; I pray for betyter luck with version 8.

  • Same issue here. I have been using Quicken since the mid '90s, so I am no novice to installing, updateing and validating installs. I tried all of the fixes listed (Safe mode manual install, etc) and still receive the prompt "a patching engine error has occurred".

    Quicken 2009 Premier
Windows XP with all current updates and patches
  • I'm having the exact same problem updating to version 7 (Operating System is Windows Vista).  Tried all the fixes.  No help.  Thanks everyone.
Hello All,

I want to provide an update to on work we have been doing with respect to this patching error.  Many of you have signed up in the FAQ provided by Kathryn and some have been generous with your time and provided a copy of the patch log. Your help has been greatly appreciated as we learned what was happening.

We have released an updated patch that we believe will resolve the error you are experiencing.  In working with some of you directly we found it patched Quicken 2009 to the R7 release.

The easiest and fastest way for you to get the update is to go to the link below and download the manual patch.

http://quicken.intuit.com/support/articles/using-quicken/patches-and-updates/7154.html

We appreciate your feedback and believe the updated patch will resolve the problem for you.  Please continue to let us know if it does not.  We are monitoring your feedback and want to respond if it is not working.

Thanks for all your help!

  • I am also having this problem.
  • Followed the new link and still get the patching error.
I am having an issue, but I am not getting the patch error that people are reporting here.  When I tell it to update, it appears that the update utility is looking for R6 and not R7 so it says I am up to date.  I have done everything suggested (turned off virus scan, closed other apps, etc...).  Any help here?

Scratch this--tried the manual update and it worked.  Hope the next update goes smoother.
  • My update to version 7 still failed after applying the patch. Any other solution?
